Imitating to the End
"While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' Then he fell on his knees and cried out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' When he said this he fell asleep."
Acts 7:59- 60
This story is moving no matter who you are. I think Stephen is a beautiful example of the transforming power of Jesus. If you read chapter 7 Stephen has already boldly pointed out to his listeners that they are resisting God just as Israel has done from the beginning. He has spoken the truth and is now suffering the consequences.
How would you react after that first stone hit? How about the next moment when you realize that you are about to be murdered? Stephen's response is so beautiful. With firm presence of mind he gives himself over to God and then offers forgiveness to his murders. When put to the test Stephen exhibits extraordinary Christ likeness. These words were not premeditated...they were the outflow of who Stephen had learned to be in Jesus. He had so imitated Christ that in the moment of trial he continued that imitation. I pray that when that time comes, no matter what it looks like, that I too will be so conformed to the image of Christ that it will show in that moment.
