A Common Point

"The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture:

'He was led like a sheep to
the slaughter,
and as a lamb before the
shearer is silent,
so he did not open his
mouth.
In his humiliation he was
deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken
from the earth.'

The eunuch asked Philip, 'Tell me, please who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?' Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus." Acts 8:32-35

This passage comes in the middle of the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch. Philip has been led by God to go into the desert and has a "divine appointment" with this eunuch. The circumstances could not be more ideal for Philip. This man is primed to receive the good news of Jesus Christ. He just happens to be returning from a time of worship. He just happens to be reading one of the most beautiful messianic prophesies in the OT. Philip just happens to be around to explain what it means. And by "just happens" I mean that God orchestrated everything to bring this man to salvation.

However, I think there is something to take a way from this about how we share the gospel. Philip essentially starts with what the man believes that is true and works to reveal more about the truth. This is a profound way to approach sharing our faith. Every person has some area where they are either living or understand the truth. It may be small and difficult to find, but it's there. Whatever that kernel of truth happens to be is a great place to start with explaining the work and person of Jesus.
